3rd International Pilonidal Conference Summary

The 3rd International Pilonidal Conference was held on 2nd December 2023 in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Just like Berlin 2017, it was a sell out.

Co-convened by Susanne Haas (Denmark) and Peter Wysocki (Australia).

The pre-conference dinner allowed for all sorts of discussions.

The first session focused on patient reported outcomes and experiences.

Lauren Boyd presented her experience following open treatment of pilonidal sinus.

Matt Lee presented about patient decision regret esp. burden of wound care.

Susanne Haas presented on patient reported outcomes. While there are no Pilonidal validated PROMs, generic questionnaires have been used.

Ekmel Tezel presented the Berlin 2017 Classification
Type 1: midline disease only
Type 2: midline disease plus lateral opening
Type 3: disease below tip of coccyx
Type 4: recurrence

The next session was How I Do It.
Roland Andersson presented great outcomes after up to 4 modified Lord Miller procedures even out to 10 years followup. Midline trephines are sutured (hence "modified" LM) and sutures removed at day 10.

Steve Immerman showed how Cleft LIft can be used for routine treatment of pilonidal sinus (Berlin 2017 Type 1 and Type 2) as well as for recurrences (Type 4) and edge of anus wounds (Type 3).

Mehmet Kaplan presented the different ways of designing the Limberg Flap - but only one (Limberg Type 6) should be used as it avoids the lowermost scar being or crossing the midline.

Sessions 3 and 4 addressed other aspects of pilonidal disease and we finished with the free papers session.

Hopefully we can have a meeting in 2024 and 2025.
